The Spring Term Cometh!

Good afternoon! It is a lovely day up here in Schenectady, quite sunny with only a slight breeze to cool the temperatures a bit. Although not quite warm enough to play frisbee out on West Beach yet, it was a wonderful way to start off spring term!

But before speak of glory of the spring, let me first recount a bit of spring break. While most students were home enjoying the time with their family and catching up on sleep or road-tripping with friends, a few of us Union swimmers were down in Knoxville, Tennessee, finishing up the swim season at NCAA Nationals.

I can honestly say that it was one of the best weeks of my life. After working hard throughout the season and dedicating so much time and effort to training, it was wonderful to spend the break with my teammates competing and continuing to see our hard work pay off. Not only were we very pleased with our performances, we just had a blast spending the week together and growing closer as a relay team!

One of the wonderful things about sports teams in college is that you have an automatic group of friends to start off freshman year and are able to branch out, while still having a support system to always come back to. But as time progresses, the simple camaraderie grows into something more, forging bonds between teammates quite like those found in a family.

And I am truly thankful for Union Swimming and Diving--all of my teammates, the coaches, parents and friends make the whole experience quite unforgettable and something that has shaped me into the student, athlete, and person I am today.

So, next time you have nothing to do on a Saturday afternoon, come watch one of our meets! They actually can be quite exciting, especially when there's an intense race like there was at the National meet (31 year mens NCAA champions, Kenyon College, fell to Denison University by 1 point, with the victory being determined by the final race, which came down to .06 seconds)!! And if you don't know anything about the sport of swimming and would like to know more, feel free to leave a question or comment. I was considering writing a post on the topic since most people don't know a whole lot about our sport, but thought it would be easier to reply to any specific questions instead.

And although it was a wonderful week, it was a little rough getting back into the swing of things with the start of classes today, especially since we just arrived back on campus around noon yesterday. But with a quick nap or too (essential to all college students, especially student-athletes) and just running on the pure excitement that is spring term, we made it through Day 1 of Week 1!

I am very excited that it is finally spring!! Not only is it my off-season from sports, but it is also the most beautiful and relaxing time of year. I mentioned a few of the many spring events that go on at Union in a past post and I cannot wait to write more about them! I can already picture the sunny weather for Spring Fest and taste the delicious food at the Lobster Bake (okay, I admit it, I don't really eat lobster, but there's something for even the non-seafood eaters there!).

So, classes started off well--I finally have a third class picked out (yes!) and the new Wold Center is now open. I'll be sure to post some pictures of the building over the next few days, it's absolutely gorgeous! They did a great job incorporating it with the preexisting architecture and the other buildings in the area.

Anyway, I hope the term starts off well for everyone and that the last remains of this snow melts so that we can officially call this spring! Spring term here we come!!
